Misconceptions

FALSE

There are many ways to salvation.

All people will be saved in the end.

It doesn't matter how you define the Gospel "being good" is enough.

One must obey the law in the Bible to be saved.

There is a second chance after death for one to respond to the Gospel and become saved. Therefore there is no great urgency to respond in the present life.

One must plead for mercy in order to become saved. This may take a very long time, but one must plead until one is assured they are saved.

One must follow Christ's example and seek to live as he lived. In order to be a Christian One must practice the "imitation of Christ".

Prayer is an essential element in becoming saved. One must pray "the prayer of repentance."

A life of good works is necessary to attain salvation. One must earn the right to go to Heaven.

One must be baptised in water in order to be saved. At the moment of baptism one becomes "born again."

One must repent of one's sins before coming to Christ for salvation.

TRUE

Jesus firmly asserted

I am the way the truth and the life. No one comes to the father but by me." John 14:6

Peter, Jesus disciple said

"Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved."
Acts 4:12

Not all people will be saved because not all people trust in Christ for salvation.

"He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.
John 3:18.

Scripture catogorises people into two classes -SAVED and UNSAVED- and portrays the final destiny of each person as being in one of two relities, Heaven or Hell. (Read also Matthew 25:32-46)
It doesn't matter how you define the Gospel "being good" is enough.

The apostle Paul warned Christians of the danger of following a different Gospel and different Jesus.

"But I fear, lest by any means, as the serpent beguiled Eve through his subtilty, so your minds should be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ. For if he that cometh preacheth another Jesus, whom we have not preached, or if ye receive another spirit, which ye have not received, or another gospel, which ye have not accepted, ye might well bear with him."
2 Cor 11:3,4

He reminded people that any gospel different from the one Christ preached was no gospel at all. (Read also Galatians 1:6-8) A different gospel involves a denial or perversion of the message of the Grace of God. A false gospel always has as it's identifying stamp a requirement to do good deeds to warrant Gods favour and salvation

God did not give the law as a means of attaining salvation. But God did give us the law to show us what sin is. (Read also Exodus 20:1-17)

"Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight: for by the law is the knowledge of sin." Rom 3:20

The law shows God's Holy standards of conduct and shows the consequences of those standards being violated. As you go through life you soon reliase you don't measure up to God's Holy standards and therefore have to admit we have a sin problem. The law also leads us to the only answer to our sin and points to the redemption and marvelous Grace of God through salvation in Christ. Once we have been lead to the cross and found the savior the law has done it’s job and no longer hold sway over us.

"For they being ignorant of God's righteousness, and going about to establish their own righteousness, have not submitted themselves unto the righteousness of God. For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to every one that believeth."
Rom 10:3,4

There is no second chance.

"And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment" Heb 9:27

Once you die there is no further opportunity for redemption hence the urgency of

"behold, now is the day of salvation." 2 Cor 6:2

Salvation comes only through faith in Christ alone. God provides pardon for anyone who believes, no one has to plead for it. It is a free gift of God.

"For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life." John 3:16

"Sirs, what must I do to be saved? And they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house." Acts 16:30,31

We do not have it in us to live as Christ lived. We are fallen human beings.

"For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God." Rom 3:23

Only the Holy Spirit working in us can duplicate Christ in our lives and this happands after we are saved. (Read also Galatians 5:16-23)

Prayer is the vehicle for the expression of faith, It is faith that brings salvation not the prayer through which faith is communicated.

"Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house." Acts 16:30,31

"But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him." Heb 11:6

Salvation is based entirely on God's grace alone, not works.

"For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast." Eph 2:8,9

Salvation and new birth come through faith in Christ alone.

"For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life." John 3:16

Paul distingushed between the Gospel that saves and baptism (Read also 1 Corinthians 1:17 and 15:1,2) The thief on the cross (Luke 23:42,43) and Cornelius (Acts 10:45-48) were both saved by faith alone before being baptised in water. A believer should be baptisied following the new birth in obediance to Christ.

Repent means a change of mind as related to Christ and what he did for salvation. Once you become a Christian, God's ideal is that your life be characterised by an ongoing repentance of (turning away from) sin.
